I'm so glad that real music is being discussed on here. Coltrane was God! You guys ever get into Thelonious Monk or Charles Mingus?

Who? I know, isn't it refreshing? And yeah, I"m a big Monk and Mingus fan. I actually caught TS Monk (Thelonious's son) live a year ago or so... he's a pretty great bebop/hardbop drummer. And Mingus was a damn fine bassist. My personal favorites are Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis, Tommy Flanagan, Pharaoh Sanders (radical shit but i like it when i'm in the mood to listen to my favorite things for 57 minutes) and fusion like the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report... and I often throw Zappa in that category as well. Which of course is in addition to Beethoven, The Meters, Sly and the Family Stone, Gustav Holst, Thin Lizzy, Stravinsky, RUSH, Pink Floyd, Yes, 70s Genesis, BB King, Bob Dylan, Robert Johnson, King Crimson, Albert King, and into metal like Opeth, Dream Theater, Symphony X, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Amon Amarth, Epica, Mayhem, The Summoning, and stuff like that. That shit's real music. Although I don't discount other styles as not being music. I just don't particularly enjoy listening to techno or house or a lot of rap or pop (pop is pretty much shit). Although I did see something funny when Katy Perry's band played an excerpt from Rush's Cygnus X-1. That was pretty hilarious. The audience was totally flummoxed.

I just about creamed my pants when you said Mahavishnu Orchestra. John McLaughlin was a genius. The Meters, Sly and the Family Stone, Robert Johnson.... Shit man, I'm impressed. I didn't think other people listened to that stuff anymore I'm pretty open to most music, but modern pop and hip hop can suck a big fat floppy dick as far as I'm concerned. My taste falls somewhere between St. Yared of Ethiopia and The Beastie Boys of New York. I even like country up until about the Gram Parsons era (or Cosmic American Music as he called it). I get into a lot of 70's punk and 80's alternative like The Clash, The Police, Stiff Little Fingers, Violent Femmes, Pixies. As far as more modern music, I'm more indie oriented. Stuff like Elliott Smith or Guided by Voices. I'm a sucker for melody. Which isn't really a surprise when you consider that I had The Bealtes and Beethoven shoved down my throat in my early years (one of the many blessings that I count daily). My real passion, though, is 60's Psych and British Invasion. (In no particular order)I love: The Kinks, The Who, The Stones, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Zombies, The Pretty Things, Harry Nilsson,The Hollies, The Byrds, The United States of America, 13th Floor Elevators, West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Syd Barrett's Floyd (though I love ALL Floyd), Early to Mid Zappa (Again, I love all Zappa but the early to mid stuff is top notch), H.P. Lovecraft, Love, The Incredible String Band, Moby Grape, The Misunderstood, Airplane, etc... (I could go on for hours so I'll stop there ) Oh, and how could I forget. Jethro Fucking Tull. Considering your classical taste, I'd imagine that you could appreciate the genius that is Ian Anderson. Thick As A Brick, Passion Play, Aqualung... all of em, all great albums. I'd even argue that Thick As A Brick is the greatest song ever written. I kid you not

Yeah man, i love McLaughlin. That debut Mahavishnu Orchestra album, Inner Mounting Flame, was a forty five minute orgasm. It'z sad that not many listen to stuff like that, The Meters, Sly, all that solid stuff. A tragedy in fact.
And that'z some good shit you got goin on there, sir! Specially the Police... Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers were pretty underrated musicians. and hell yes to 60s British Invasion. There were a staggering amount of phenomenal bands comin' from dem Britz at that time, it's crazy.
As for me, I had 100% classical shoved down my throat till five years ago, I heard the Doors, and the door [no pun intended] broke wide open as far as rock and stuff goes. Two years ago, I heard Afro Blue for the first time, and it was f'n sick! The rezt is history.

Playing music is my life man! I don't know if you remember but back in the day I told ya about my muzic playing. I play guitar (progressive rock and jazz, with some funk thrown in there), piano (jazz, rock, classical, metal), drums (progressive rock and jazz/funk), bass (jazz), tenor sax (jazz), mandolin (folk and rock), and, jeez. Other stuff. Lol. That's kinda what I live for, funk everything else.

Nice, you've got some nice instruments under your belt there! I play a lot of blues and folky stuff. I'm mainly a guitarist (I'm better at it than anything else in life ) but I also play Cello, Bass (upright or electric), Piano, Mandolin and Drums. And I dabble in Viola, Violin (Classical or Contemporary), Harmonica, Ocarina, Penny Whistle, Spoons, Egg Shakers, Kazoo, Bongos, Xylophone, Marimba, Timpani, Hand Claps, Random Things I Find Around The House, Regular Whistling, and Vocal Harmony! Lol, don't ask me how one dabbles in these things (most of em are quite easy!) but I do.

I"m liking the instrumentz in that second paragraph Particularly the Egg Shakers. Those thingz are pretty dope. I've always wanted to orchestrate the Black Page #1 for various sized Egg Shakers.

Who and I were discussing the possibilities of doing some mail jamming in the near future. You should get down on that, Life. You have recording means?
